Ben Harvey-Ashenhurst
Ben Harvey-Ashenhurst’s passion for science and mathematics was sparked during his time at Castle Rock School. The enthusiastic and dedicated teaching staff not only nurtured his natural curiosity but also provided engaging and interactive lessons that inspired him to pursue a career in education.“The teachers at Castle Rock were so passionate about their subjects, which made learning exciting,” Ben recalls. “I was especially captivated by the experiments in science and the innovative teaching methods in mathematics, which transformed my understanding and enjoyment of the subject.”
After completing his studies at Castle Rock, Ben pursued a BSc (Hons) in Physics at Nottingham Trent University, building on the strong foundation he gained in science and mathematics. His career journey began with a role as a Learning Support Assistant, which offered invaluable experience in classrooms and special education settings. This early exposure confirmed his passion for teaching, leading him to complete a Primary PGCE at the University of Derby.
Following this, Ben built a rich and varied career in the classroom, teaching across a diverse range of primary schools—including both small-town settings and a large inner-city school. He developed a particular passion for mathematics, which led to his appointment as curriculum leader for the subject across 22 primary schools within a multi-academy trust—an influential role that further deepened his expertise and broadened his impact. Ben is especially proud of his work in promoting mathematics and nurturing a lifelong enjoyment of the subject. He holds a strong belief that all children should not only feel confident and capable in mathematics, but thoroughly enjoy it!
Ben’s academic journey didn’t stop there. He went on to earn an MA in Advanced Educational Practice from The Institute of Education at University College London and is currently pursuing his PhD in Education at the University of Leicester.
Today, Ben serves as the Head of the Primary PGCE, a Lecturer of Education at the University of Leicester. His role involves lecturing, mentoring trainee teachers, supervising MA students, developing curricula, and conducting research in mathematics education.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to shape the next generation of teachers,” he says.
Integral to his role is within The University of Leicester's Partnership Group; as the academic lead, Ben works in collaboration with headteachers and senior leaders to co-create the teacher training course. Together they develop critically thinking teachers of the future, that are confidently prepared to guide children toward excellent outcomes and brilliant futures.
Ben credits Castle Rock School with giving him the tools and confidence to embark on his journey. “The school’s inspiring environment and the teachers’ dedication instilled a love for learning that I now pass on to my students.”
Looking ahead, Ben aspires to continue to develop as an academic, continuing his impactful work in education and research. He considers positively influencing the lives of children and adults as his greatest professional accomplishments to date.
