Oscar Campbell
Back in the summer of 2021, Team GB’s boxers were making history at the Olympic games in Tokyo.
Their years of discipline, focus and hard-work resulted in six medals, the highest haul for 100 years.
It was hoped that the exploits of Galal Yafai (gold), Lauren Price (gold), Ben Whittaker (silver), Pat McCormack (silver), Frazer Clarke (bronze) and Karriss Artingstall (bronze) would inspire Britain’s next generation of boxers.
One of those ‘next gen’ fighters was Oscar Campbell, a former pupil at The Castle Rock School and now a promising amateur boxer.
Whilst studying at Sixth Form, Oscar was training with Team GB, the amateur setup that not only helped to orchestrate the 2021 medal haul, but who also coached the likes of Anthony Joshua and Joe Joyce.
After leaving Castle Rock in the summer of 2022, Oscar took a year out, opting to focus on his boxing; developing his craft and honing his skills.
He continued training and working in a boxing gym at the University Academy 92, the institution he plans to study at come September.
Before that though, Oscar will take to the ring in the summer, fighting for not one but two regional belts; the Greater Manchester welterweight and super-welterweight belts.
Victory will make Oscar a three-time regional champion, having also won the East Midlands welterweight title in late 2021.
Oscar then hopes to make a good impression with the university boxing team, compete in Varsity competitions and then use that success to accelerate his development with whispers of a pro-career faintly audible.
Oscar was full of praise for the role Castle Rock have played in his journey so far: “I am grateful for the support and interest from all the teachers and staff,” he said, “you allowed me to push my boxing and helped me find this university which has given me so many opportunities.”
Who knows, in years to come, it might be Oscar inspiring the UK’s next generation of boxers!
